NNC’s Keri Maxfield recently served as one of three national jurors selected to adjudicate Scholastic’s One Earth Award in Art at the Scholastic Headquarters in NYC. She was joined on the panel by artists Sarah Sunde and Alexis Rockman.

The team spent the day in two rounds of viewing and judging hundreds of works in multiple media entered by students in grades 7-12 throughout the country. All works were evaluated on how they demonstrate originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal vision or voice. Additionally, works considered for the One Earth Award were evaluated on how they address the theme of climate change.

“I left feeling humbled by the effort and work level of the student submissions and feeling hopeful that such thoughtful and talented young adults were out there, excited and ready to add their energy to this world. I congratulate each and every one of them,” remarked Maxfield.

Other jurors present that day reviewed works in painting, drawing and illustration and digital art.

The Scholastic Awards are the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens, and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers in the United States. Through the Awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Nearly 115,000 students submitted approximately 340,000 original works during the 2019 program year across 29 different categories of art and writing.
